Identify the exact reference first
Compare the same denomination, date, mint mark and variety using the issuing mint or a reputable numismatic reference. A specification for a different issue can create a false mismatch. Do not rely on a seller’s copied specification alone.
Record measurements without damaging the coin
Use suitable scales and calipers gently, and note the reference tolerance where available. Wear, measurement error and different issues complicate comparisons. Do not acid-test, file, scratch or polish a collectible coin.
Compare the edge and design details
Record unexpected seams, lettering differences or inconsistent relief as observations. A casting seam may be suspicious, but absence of one is not proof. Altered dates or mint marks can occur on an otherwise genuine coin with plausible weight.
Escalate value-sensitive decisions
Before paying for a valuable coin, use an established authentication service or qualified numismatist. A seller’s story, magnet response or a checklist with no obvious mismatch cannot establish composition or authenticity.
